Journalism: At the mercy of advertisers?

Can news just get any more disheartening after I've completed my very first article, only to be told by my editor that the supplement may not be published due to the absence of any advertising?

W.T.H!!!!!

After two nights of slogging, I may most likely have to come to the conclusion that my effort was in vain.

With that said, this set me thinking. Are newspapers at the mercy of advertisers? Is it possible for newspapers to continue their operation without advertisements? Where has the true meaning of journalism gone to? By nature, journalism is supposed to education, entertain and inform readers, and not be a channel of marketers who want to promote their services!

Perhaps in today's day and age, we are truly living in a money-grabbing world...

Sad. =(
